Just finished up with 4 nights in Golden Sands at Benone. Benone is a beautiful area on the Derry coastal road heading in the direction of Coleraine, Portsteward and Portrush. The entrance to the site is a tad strange as the entrance road services 3 different campsites.
Nevertheless, Golden Sands is where I had booked in and the site is huge. It is mainly statics and there is an area where tourers have seasonal pitches. The short term pitches are near the back of the site but thats really an advantage as there is a gate in the fence that brings you right down to the beach. The gate is open every day from 8am until 9pm.
There is only 1 service block and they have Covid restrictions where only 2 people at any time can be in the facilities. They are spotless and while they charge for showers the cost is only 20p.
All the pitches for motorhomes and caravans are fully serviced hardstands with power, water and drainage to each pitch. There is a convenience store at the entrance to the site and a chip shop that opens in the evenings until 11pm.
My gripe here is that the site is mainly for statics and they focus heavily on that part of their business. A point to mention here is that the chemical toilet was blocked for 2 days. While I didn't sense any urgency in getting it rectified, they could have closed it off to prevent people continuing to add to the problem. It would (in my opinion)have been easy to hire in a port-a-loo as a temporary substitute especially in the present circumstances.
Other than that, a good site, a great location and the weather was superb.
I will be back.
