Westport House There is a huge amount right with Westport House as a campsite venue. Firstly, the staff, mainly young, but all very helpful and all very hard working. They are a definite plus. The camping stands are a decent size and come with electric. There are water points dotted around the site. The site is kept clean and the curfew was observed well. The campsite is located on the Westport House campus. The site is big and includes a large area for tents as well as an area for caravans and campers. Each has their own toilet and shower block. The toilets are well maintained and the showers are free. There is a laundry facility and a camper’s kitchen.
At the moment the Westport House is being renovated, i dont think its open to visitors.Adjacent to the campsite is a pizza restaurant and bistro. This was serving food outdoors and was doing great business, every night. The site also has a small theme park. The Pirate Adventure Park isn’t Disney land but it is a pretty good way of passing three or four hours. Residents get a discount on the theme park. entry for a family of four after discount was €52 for a full day. There is on site bike hire and this is a great base to go out on the Greenway or on day trips to places like Achill. If you are in this neck of the woods it would be a crime not to go to Keem beach. I'm not sure there is a more beautiful beach in Ireland. The site is a decent walk into Westport or down to the Westport quays, but it is walkable. Either has a good selection of shops and restaurants. Westport really is one of Ireland’s best towns to visit. The site has a gaelic pitch that kids can play on, but for some strange reason there is no playground. At least one of the main campsite brochures has a playground symbol for this site so be warned. For us, this is a big drawback and one that’s hard to understand. There is loads of room. Our kids are 5 and 6 and the playground tends to be where they make friends on these trips. There is a playground about 15 minutes walk from the campsite, but its not a natural gathering point. Westport House is not a cheap stay. We had five nights for two adults, two kids and hook up with an awning and second vehicle for 260.We had a good time and I would recommend a visit, but having done it once that’s enough for me.
