Keel Sandy Banks Achill now Keel Camping was created by Runner2011
Was there in August during the hot spell. No Hardstands were available so it was up on the Grass with No Electricity point available, there are plenty there its just the site was full due to the great weather. Fantastic location right beside the beach , clean showers and toilettes and considering the site was so full it was impressive. Great location to be based for beach activities and the Cycle Greenway.

We are back here again for a 2 nights and yet again we are not dissapointed...
This site deserves its 4 stars.
New showers are under construction and there is a new motorhome facilities area (we use to have to drive on the grass)
AND it was only €19 a night including hook up!!!
Fantastic value

The Site:
On the main road into Keel, on the left hand site, right beside the beach (it's behind the golf course as you come in, watch for signs).
Big site, lots of hard stands which have EHU. Open grass areas for camping, caravans, motorhomes, a bit undulating and uneven in sections. EHU can be far away and in big demand, so not always available. Dedicated Motorhome service station area, fresh water, grey/black water disposal, bins etc.
Two facilities blocks, main reception block (A) has reception, games room, laundry, toilets, showers, sinks for dishwashing. Block B has more toilets, showers, campers kitchen, fridges/freezer for camper use. Tokens for above. Top tip, showers in Block A are much better than block B
€31 p/n 2+3+dog+EHU (€22 unit, €3 EHU, €3/child)
Loyalty card, 7th night free, 13th & 14th free. Doesn't need to be in one stay, card is for the season.
The Area:
We've been to Achill every year for the last ten years we love it so much, staying on this site as a base. www.visitachill.com/
Keel beach is fantastic (there are at least five blue flag beaches on the island), go surfing (rent boards or get lessons from Surf le Tomás our favourite), kite surfing, kayaking (night kayaking with Tomás is brilliant, fishing, just some. Fantastic drives around the island, the west coast drive especially, drop into Mickeys Bar on the way round for a thirst quencher. A visit to Keem bay is a must, bit of a scary drive and can be busy.
Options for food include Gieltys (most Westerly pub in Europe apparently) on the road to Keem ( www.gieltys.com/ ), and they operate a free shuttle bus. The recently renovated Amethyst Bar ( www.facebook.com/AmethystBarAchill/ ) now does excellent pub grup, cross the road to the Annexe Inn (don't think they do t'internet - it's that kind of place :) so no web link, though they do have WiFi) for a great pint and trad sessions, very welcoming, children and dogs welcome

We had 5 nights here in August - hadn't stayed for over 10 years and it was busy but lovely. The hot spell helped and the beachside location is fantastic. Good facilities that are all well managed but one big negative is the lack of security on the site preventing walk ins from the adjacent commonage area that was full of wild campers.
Easy access to eateries and a few shops for basics.
Found out that a full day room gazebo shelter is not considered an awning so was not permitted - seemingly too dangerous in windy weather!

We stayed here last year for 3 nights, after 3 nights in Clifden. A beautiful drive up through Connemara, Mayo and past Kylemore Abbey. (stopped in for some sinful chocolate...made by the nuns!!!). The campsite has wonderful facilities, clean showers and toilets, Aires (more than just a glorified toilet) and proximity to the beach...even a shower coming off the beach to wash off the sand. great base for Achill touring.....or chilling
